CITY OF SYDNEY LORD MAYOR’S PRIZE
WINNER
Liberty Place has revitalised the precinct
between Castlereagh and Pitt Streets,
juxtaposing layer upon layer of contemporary
urban fabric, yet is complementing
the heritage listed Legion House. The
development creates a new public space for
city workers and visitors to escape the hustle
and bustle of the city streets. It provides a
light-filled pedestrian laneway and plaza
activated by retail and dining and is a valuable
mid-block city pedestrian link connecting
these two streets. The inclusion of public art,
especially the white neon mobile ‘Light Event’
by Welsh artist Cerith Wyn Evans, a grand
work that is light in spirit and lifts the space
further. Liberty Place delivers on the highest
sustainable development principles, with ANZ
Tower and Legion House both achieving the
highest possible 6 Star Green Star design
rating. The heritage listed Legion House
has been refurbished as a fully zero carbon

building, an Australian first for a refurbished
building, creating its own renewable electricity
generation. Liberty Place responds to the site’s
inherent attributes and carefully assembles
the ground plane, street walls, tower element,
heritage fabric and public spaces into a
cohesive whole. It is a significant addition to
the city.
