In the Australian Museum Crystal Hall, steel
is well utilised to minimise structure and
thickness while maximising control. Fine
columns, thin planes for the ramp, floor and
roof – all achieved with steel – are wrapped
in zinc cladding which plays beautifully
with the sandstone of the existing building.
Emphasising the contrast of the new light,
glass box with the heavy masonry behind,
stainless steel is used with coloured glass
panels to create an adjustable screen to
William Street. This finely crafted yet robust
system enables the tuning of colour and light
to bring a crystalline quality to the space.
