The Crackenback Stables creatively re-
interprets the genre of the corrugated iron
shed. The compound of buildings is set in the
challenging environment of bushland snowy
mountains, where it must contend with the
extremes of climate, fire and snow, as well
as the maintenance rigours of a functioning
stables and accommodation.
A galvanised corrugated skin wraps the roof
and over long external walls of the building
– pitched and detailed to provide a path for
efficient snow shedding. At building ends
and cutaways where snow does not land the
galvanised profiled sheet is contrasted with
the richness of corten steel – the play between
materials reflecting the sliver and red elements
of the natural landscape around it. Internally
stainless steel is utilised for its robustness, but
detailed with a precision and sophistication
that refines the internal experience of the
building.
Ultimately the elegant siting and expression
of these buildings in the rugged snowy
mountains landscape goes beyond the
tradition of the shed to create sculptural steel
objects that befit a spectacular landscape.
