The 1916 Commonwealth Bank building set
a new benchmark for commercial office
buildings in Sydney, with high quality
architectural design, materials, finishes,
access to natural light and ventilation and a
significant contribution to the urban fabric of
Martin Place.
The revitalisation of the ‘Money Box’ building
thoughtfully reimagines the building for the
21st century tenant and provides premium
commercial spaces which reveal, celebrate and
reinterpret the original architecture.
Significant relationships, spaces and
fabric of the existing building have been
revealed, conserved and enhanced, and lost
elements reconstructed and reinterpreted.
Redevelopment of the building’s uninspired
1968 extension includes a new extended
facade, which reflects and articulates the
noble proportions and materials of the
adjoining 1916 building, including sandstone
and reclaimed trachyte from the sixties
addition. The ten storey addition dramatically
cantilevers over the earlier building. The
original central light-well has been reinstated
as a light-filled atrium, providing natural light
to the reconstructed lay-light in the Banking
Chamber.
5 Martin Place is an exemplary heritage-led
renewal project.
