SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE
COMMENDATION
This house is a delightfully re-crafted early
twentieth century cottage on a constrained
site. The contemporary rear addition and
tightly dimensioned first floor bedroom
manages to create generous, flowing, warm
and inviting spaces.
Materially this project benefits from a robust
and complimentarily palette. Reclaimed
bricks provide a textured backdrop for matt
black joinery. Overhead cabinets hover off
the wall, with lighting placed to dramatise
the brickwork’s colour, texture, and rhythm.
A sensitively placed Japanese Maple fills
the tile lined courtyard addressing the main
living area, bathroom, bedroom, and elevated
deck. A window seat here provides for a
contemplative reading space. The enchanting
garden complements and extends the intimate
scale of the interiors.
Many skilled alterations and simple gestures
have introduced fundamental amenity to this
home which is now adaptable enough to grow
with it’s in habitants without the need for
additional rooms.

The Mini Griffin Theatre is a tiny flat packed
performance space that aims to promote the
Griffin Theatre outside of its traditional venue,
whilst referencing the quality of its intimate
theatre experience.
The ‘Really Intimate Theatre’ captures the
spirit of the original Nimrod Street venue by
recreating its tight triangular plan in miniature;
audience member sat in the apex with the
actor able to use the long side of the triangle
as their ‘stage’. In section the theatre is raked
down from the actor’s standing height to that
of the seated patron.
The intimacy of such unusual proximity of
both actor and patron creates a confronting
dynamic between the two; eye contact rarely
made in traditional theatre is unavoidable
in the Mini Griffin. This unique individualised
theatrical experience is one that remains with
those lucky enough to experience its 2-3
minute performances.
