The jury is delighted to award this artful
project which takes the backyard shed to a
new level. This humble artistic workshop for
an artist couple has been thoughtfully sited,
meaningfully planned and neatly detailed. The
building provides an important precedent for
backyard urban life and is an exciting model of
what is possible with a simple brief and small
budget.
Despite being only 35 square meters, the
building has an intriguing public quality, which
seems to expand the potential of the owner’s
artistic practice and suggests that the pavilion
might host mini exhibitions or neighbourhood
gatherings at the bottom of the garden. The
building talks to the site and surrounding
neighbours and is a highly open and engaging
building. The consideration given to the artist’s
physical habitation and work process within
the building, together with the quality of light
and consideration of views and perspectives
from and into the workshop, are artfully
resolved. This is a work of small architecture
with big ideas.
