Overlooking the 1936 Wyldefel Gardens in
Potts Point, 10 Wylde Street demonstrates
sensitivity and respect for its layered, historical
context, through its quietly confident and
skilful planning, building massing, creative use
of materials and refined detailing.
Its vertical masonry volume reflects the
existing rhythm and built form of Wylde
Street, and is juxtaposed with horizontal
lightweight and finely detailed glazed
balconies that embrace panoramic views
to the harbour. The eastern facade and
narrow street elevation to the west utilise an
elongated grey concrete brick to create deep
vertical blades. On the more solid southern
façade, addressing an adjacent apartment
building, the brickwork opens up into screens,
allowing natural light and ventilation into
the communal lobby and stairwell. Copper
butterfly screens are arranged externally in a
playful composition that are a signature for
the building, as well as delivering both privacy
and juliette balconies to the bedrooms.
Internally, the apartments have a sense of
generosity and grandeur with sweeping
harbour views tempered by framed vertical
views to the east and west. Typical plan
arrangement has two apartments per lift
at each level, allowing cross ventilation
and a northerly orientation to almost every
apartment.
Construction is of high quality and the finer
details, such as oversized skirting boards and
bi-fold doors, reference the neighbouring
grand residences, and amplify the generous
interior scale.
