COMMENDATION
This is a house that brings joy to the street
– a flashback in time to the 1950s that is
thematic without becoming a theme park.
Responding to the client’s passion for the
era, the house captures this spirit while
simultaneously creating a home that is very
much contemporary; a home with a distinctive
character that manages not to be jarring in the
suburban streetscape.
The house is arranged along the northern
boundary – a move that opens it up along
its long axis to a series of beautifully formed
exterior spaces that unify the composition
of building elements. Internally the spatial
arrangement and detailing is informed by
mid-century modernism, providing a fitting a
backdrop to the owners’ collections of the era.
Throughout, a creative take on 1950s colour
schemes is fresh and not derivative.
This is a house in which every design decision
has been intelligently and thoroughly
considered. It is true to the particular brief
of the owners, skilful in composition, playful
in execution, and generous to its suburban
context.
