This extraordinary house for an art patron
challenges preconceived notations of a home.
Externally an extravagant sculptural exercise,
its real mastery lies inside, in the internal
manipulation of light, scale and materials. The
deft choreography of these elements creates
an experience of calmness and serenity, an
almost monastic quality. The sophisticated
spatial composition and shifts in scale
juxtapose spaces of remarkable intimacy and
grandeur, creating a building that is successful
both as a home for one and a gathering space
for many.
From the surprise and delight of the circular
entry vestibule, a compressed corridor acts as
the threshold to the grand staircase hall that
runs the length and height of the building.
This is the heart of the house – a majestic,
composed and generous space – its beauty
and pervasive sense of calm enlivened by
a breathtaking control of light from above.
The complex shifts in scale at each level of
the house, together with the refined control
of views, balance with privacy and make
each and every space a delight to inhabit.
The restrained material palette and nuanced
detailing are simultaneously playful and
inventive, tactile and understated, always
allowing the play of light within the spatial
composition to prevail.
Indigo Slam is an extraordinary achievement, a
timeless building that will continue to bring joy
to those fortunate enough to experience it.
