This sports hall and playing field have been
expertly placed on a tricky site, as part of an
overall master plan that works to minimise
impact to the immediately adjacent trees
and surrounding forest, whilst still providing
logical entry ways and connections. Further
consideration of the building’s orientation and
control of its envelope result in finely tuned
and high quality spaces. A well tested and
expertly handled section works to optimise
natural light and ventilation, with the main
volume of the hall relying solely on natural
ventilation year round, and natural light
maximised without risk of glare. Roof water
is captured and harvested with surplus water
used for irrigation and grey water flushing.
A constant and carefully considered
connection with its forest surroundings has
resulted in a building that works in harmony
with its context.

The extensive consideration of sustainability
issues in this major commercial development
are to be commended.
ANZ Tower incorporates a suite of
environmental initiatives and is currently the
largest office building in NSW to achieve
a 6 Star Green Star rating. Designed to
address environmental concerns both in its
construction and continued daily use, the
building’s integrated functions are developed
to reduce energy demand and promote
efficient use of resources. Its thermally
efficient skin of glass and louvres reduces the
impact of solar load, and two x450 kilowatt
tri-generation plants generate electricity from
building waste.
The public domain at street level has been
significantly enhanced with the provision of
a new pedestrian link between Castlereagh
Street and Pitt Street. This vibrant new public
plaza successfully unifies juxtaposing layers of
retail, heritage, and low-rise office buildings,
and provides an inviting and free to use new
enclave for city workers and visitors in the
heart of Sydney’s CBD.
