Quintessentially Australian, this project is
completely engaged with the environment
and the culture of coastal NSW.
The building diagram and conceptual
approach describe a form that emerges
from a series of twists to address local views
and geographic features. The execution and
detailing is beautifully refined and resolved,
but still tough and robust to suit the extreme,
corrosive environment and the demands of a
‘club’ client. The skill of the architect is evident
in the fineness of brick detailing, the colour
palette and the inventiveness of the
building’s form.
There is something special about the smell
of the salt spray and the sound of the surf
harnessed through the architecture, and the
experience of being in the primary club room
upstairs is just beautiful, a truly humble space
that lifts the spirit.
