DIGITAL INNOVATION IN
ARCHITECTURE AWARD
In the relatively short history of computational
design within the field of architecture, using
digital techniques is often associated with
the creation of formally exuberant, excessive
objects with little relation to context. The UTS
studio in which AquaCulture was produced
was driven by an investigation of the anti-icon.
With AquaCulture, the collaborative student
team has rendered an outcome which
transforms the Bay’s Precinct by deploying
the logic of natural systems of growth and
reconfiguration – namely deposition of
sediment and erosion of mass – to manipulate
a novel articulation of the boundary between
city and the water’s edge. This gives rise to
new relationships on a cultural and economic
level, as well as possibilities for marine habitat
in the inter-tidal zone. The project has further
potential to incorporate CNC processes of

subtraction and deposition at an urban scale.
AquaCulture, and the Micro-Icon studio, offer
an exemplary application of agent-based
design using coding skills in an architectural
and urban scenario, which can challenge the
way in which urban planning and design might
be considered.
